Job Description

The Lead Production (Process) Chemist will be the subject matter expert and technical authority on production chemistry for Viaro Energy’s operated assets which include Bacton, Leman and Greater Sole Pit.  In addition, they will lead a team initially including a chemical management advisor with the possibility of further expansion.  The role includes the identification, selection and optimisation of all downhole, topsides and subsea chemical applications, the fulfilment of all sampling and analysis requirements and the provision of full lifecycle production chemistry support from project appraisal to decommissioning.

The Lead Production Chemist is a senior specialist role in Viaro Energy and will be a recognised subject matter expert in their discipline. The Lead is expected to operate with minimal supervision, using their own initiative and technical judgement to solve problems, make effective decisions, and prioritise workload appropriately.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

 

  • Provides chemistry expertise to maintain and/or improve flow and technical integrity and product quality, throughout the entire production system and expertise in designing stimulation fluids, through relevant manages the risks related to the deployment of chemicals.
  • Supervise and mentor a team including a chemical management advisor and a lab & chemistry engineer.
  • Supervises and co-ordinates onshore contractors to ensure compliance with the chemical injection and sampling programmes for Viaro Energy and third party subsea tie-backs.
  • Contract owner and key focal point for all chemical supply and chemistry services related contracts. Leads regular contract review meetings. Approves relevant SAP invoices to ensure accurate and timely payment.
  • Develops relationships within the wider production chemistry community to ensure awareness of industry best practice and technologies.
  • The management and reporting of accurate and auditable chemical usage and oil discharge data to comply with BEIS regulatory requirements.
  • The identification of chemistry and flow assurance related risks and opportunities and the development of appropriate management strategy

 

 

Production Chemistry and Process Optimisation

  • Provide expert technical support on production chemistry, including scale and salt control, corrosion inhibition, hydrate management, and emulsion treatment.
  • Oversee and optimise the chemical injection strategy for offshore assets, ensuring effective performance and cost efficiency.
  • Conduct root cause investigations into production chemistry issues such as fouling, integrity failures, and loss of separation efficiency.
  • Work closely with process engineers, flow assurance specialists, and production teams to troubleshoot and optimise system performance.
  • Manage laboratory testing programs, ensuring offshore and onshore analysis aligns with operational requirements.

Support to Asset

  • Works closely with the Production Engineering and Well Services teams to identify, design and optimise downhole chemical treatments to control inorganic scale, salt deposition, liquid loading and other well related flow assurance threats. Maintains well chemistry files.
  • Works closely with the Integrity and Pipeline teams to assess corrosion threats and identify appropriate control measures participates in the co-ordinates all microbiological monitoring.
  • Supports the offshore operations and onshore Process Engineering teams in the optimisation of production and utility systems to maximise production whilst meeting export and discharge specifications.
  • Provides chemicals & chemistry input into Field Development Plans, Basis and Front-End Design Engineering of production facilities and acts as assurer, actively managing risks whilst displaying a focus on simplicity and focus on the end goal.
  • The Lead Production Chemist is expected to be versatile in coaching others and will be the technical coach of a few staff including with a variety of degrees of experience, knowledge, and background.
  • The Lead Production Chemist will manage chemical suppliers, assure the quality of the technical work and supply of chemicals, as contract holder.
  • Provides timely input into regulatory chemical approval processes. Understand, and where possible, influence legislative requirements. Ensure compliance with regulatory Health, Safety and Environmental guidelines, standards, and policy.
  • Provides engineering solutions, using interpretation and decision making, to solve problems in unique expertise areas (scale treatment, H2S, scavenging, foam lifting, hydrate inhibition, corrosion management).
  • The delivery of an effective, safe and environmentally responsible production chemical treatment strategy (downhole, topsides and pipeline) to prevent production chemistry and flow assurance related losses
