About the Senior Controls & Instrumentation Engineer Role:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Controls & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join our Engineering team based in Great Yarmouth.
Reporting to the Engineering Delivery Manager, you will act as the Senior C&I technical focal point, providing engineering leadership across operating offshore gas installations and renewable energy assets.
This is a technically influential role with responsibility for maintaining the safety, integrity, reliability and compliance of instrumentation, control and safeguarding systems, while supporting brownfield modifications, operational readiness and the ongoing lifecycle management of operating assets.
You will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Technical Safety, vendors, contractors and clients, providing technical assurance and sound engineering judgement on both day-to-day operational matters and complex engineering changes.
Key responsibilities include:
▪ Senior C&I Engineering & Asset Support
▪ Acting as the senior technical focal point for C&I activities and providing technical leadership, checking and approval within delegated authority.
▪ Defining, preparing and reviewing C&I scopes of work, design bases, specifications, datasheets, requisitions and other engineering deliverables.
▪ Developing and assuring instrumentation and control designs, including instrument selection and sizing, control valves, I/O, control narratives, alarms and trips, cause & effect, logic and system architecture.
▪ Leading and coordinating changes to ICSS/DCS, PLC/SCADA, SIS/ESD, Fire & Gas and package control systems through Management of Change processes.
▪ Supporting functional safety lifecycle activities including HAZOP, LOPA and SIL assessments, Safety Requirements Specifications and proof-test philosophies.
▪ Maintaining the technical integrity of C&I Safety and Environmentally Critical Elements (SECEs) and supporting performance standard and verification requirements.
▪ Investigating recurring equipment and control-system failures and leading root-cause analysis.
▪ Developing reliability, obsolescence, critical spares and lifecycle improvement solutions.
▪ Providing technical support to Operations and Maintenance teams, including the review of equipment findings, anomalies, overrides, inhibits and emerging risks.
▪ Managing technical queries, deviations, vendor documentation and technical bid evaluations.
▪ Witnessing FAT/SAT activities and supporting commissioning, loop testing, start-up and troubleshooting.
▪ Conducting onshore and offshore surveys and ensuring drawings, databases, logic records and as-built documentation accurately reflect the operating asset.
Projects & Operational Readiness
▪ Providing C&I input throughout Concept, FEED and detailed design phases.
▪ Ensuring engineering solutions are safe, operable, maintainable and compatible with existing systems.
▪ Developing operational readiness requirements including maintenance and integrity strategies, critical spares, CMMS data, procedures and commissioning/start-up requirements.
▪ Coordinating C&I interfaces across Process, Electrical, Mechanical, Technical Safety, Telecoms/OT, Operations, vendors and contractors.
▪ Supporting proposals, estimates, schedules, risk management and work planning.
▪ Clearly communicating progress, engineering risks and technical issues to clients and project management.
▪ Coaching and mentoring engineers and technicians, promoting consistent engineering standards and continuous improvement.
Skills, Experience and qualities we are looking for:
Essential
▪ Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent in Instrumentation, Control, Electronic or a related engineering discipline, supported by substantial relevant experience.
▪ Significant C&I engineering experience within offshore oil & gas, process or energy assets, with evidence of senior technical ownership and independent decision-making.
▪ Strong practical knowledge of process instrumentation, control valves, metering/analyser systems, ICSS/DCS, PLC/SCADA, SIS/ESD, Fire & Gas and package control systems.
▪ Demonstrable experience of brownfield modifications, Management of Change, specification writing, technical assurance, commissioning and operational support.
▪ Working knowledge of functional safety, hazardous-area engineering and Major Accident Hazard / SECE requirements applicable to operating assets.
▪ Strong technical judgement with the confidence to challenge, make decisions and take ownership of safety-critical issues.
▪ Excellent technical report, specification and engineering document writing skills.
▪ Strong analytical, troubleshooting and root-cause investigation capability.
▪ Proven ability to work effectively with clients, operations teams, engineers, vendors and contractors.
▪ Strong commitment to SHEQ, change control and technical assurance.
▪ Commercial and delivery awareness with the ability to manage priorities, risks, costs and schedules.
▪ Strong IT literacy.
Desirable
▪ Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status, or actively working towards professional registration.
▪ CompEx qualification.
▪ Functional Safety training or certification relevant to the role.
▪ Current offshore survival and medical certification.
▪ Experience with engineering databases, control-system engineering tools and CMMS/document management systems.
▪ Previous experience coaching or mentoring engineers and technicians.
