Operations Apprentice, STEM Skills Development – StirlingX

Company Information:

Data and AI led company, collecting visual and photographic data using a range of devices including drones.

Developing and encouraging new talent is the lifeblood of the business. A lot of our work fits with subjects learnt academically and that can be applied directly to the work we do. We encourage new and young people to develop from ‘no knowledge’ to ‘expert’ over time with support and training.

Project Overview

StirlingX Limited is a data and AI-led company that collects visual and photographic data using advanced technologies including drones. The company operates from Felthorpe Airfield and works on projects where accurate data collection, safety, and organisation are essential.

This project focuses on developing practical STEM skills in drone operations, data management, and site-based support. The student will work alongside a professional drone operations team, supporting real-world projects while building technical confidence and understanding.

Project Aim

To develop practical skills in drone operations, data handling, maintenance, and site safety, while contributing to professional drone projects and proposing at least one practical improvement idea for the business.

Key Research Questions

• How do professional drone operations work safely and efficiently?

• What checks are required before and after drone flights?

• How is drone data captured, stored, and organised to prevent data loss?

• What routine maintenance tasks are required to keep drones operational?

• How can workflow, safety, or data handling be improved?

What You Will Do

Under supervision, you will:

• Assist with pre-flight and post-flight procedures, including equipment checks, battery management, and flight logging

• Support site-based marshalling, ensuring safe take-off and landing zones

• Collect, organise, and securely store drone-captured data (images, video, sensor data)

• Perform basic drone maintenance tasks such as cleaning components, inspecting propellers, updating firmware, and reporting faults

• Use digital tools (e.g. spreadsheets or asset management systems) to record flights and maintenance activities

• Follow aviation safety rules, health and safety procedures, and company standard operating procedures

Science, Engineering and Technical Understanding

• Learning how drone systems operate (hardware, sensors, GPS, batteries)

• Understanding aviation safety and risk management

• Applying digital literacy and structured data management

• Developing problem-solving skills through equipment checks and fault reporting

• Exploring real-world applications of technology, mathematics, and spatial data

Planning and Organisation

• Keep accurate digital records of flights and maintenance activities

• Organise files and datasets using agreed structures

• Follow checklists and procedures consistently

• Reflect on performance and identify areas for improvement

• Develop and present at least one practical improvement idea for the business

Skills Developed

• Microsoft Office and digital tools

• Data organisation and analysis

• Teamwork and communication

• Independent working and self-motivation

• Problem solving

• Organisational skills

• Understanding of aviation safety procedures

Measurable Outcomes

By the end of the project, you will be able to:

• Correctly complete 100% of assigned flight logs and data records

• Safely marshal drone operations in line with procedures

• Demonstrate routine maintenance tasks without supervision

• Organise and retrieve drone data with zero data loss incidents

• Explain basic drone system functions and safety requirements

• Present at least one clear, practical improvement idea for potential adoption

Final Outputs

• A structured written report

• A record of flight logs and maintenance documentation

• A reflection on learning and skill development

• A presentation outlining a proposed improvement idea

Reflection and Evaluation

Your report may include:

• What you learned about drone systems and data management

• How you ensured safety and accuracy in your work

• Challenges encountered and how you resolved them

• How your proposed improvement could benefit the company
