Digital Transformation of Training Content (Cross-Company Project) – Petans Ltd & Reuzer

Reuzer Company Information:
Reuzer is a digital learning and creative technology company. They help organisations train their people in smarter, safer, and more engaging ways.
They create interactive online courses, realistic animation, video content, and even 3D environments that people can access on their phones, tablets, or computers; whether they’re at home, offshore, or on-site.
A lot of their work supports industries like energy, offshore, and engineering, where safety, leadership, and technical knowledge are critical. They take complex subjects, like offshore safety, security awareness, equipment handling, or leadership training, and turn them into clear, engaging digital courses that are easy to understand and complete.
Petans Ltd Company Information:
Petans deliver emergency response, safety and survival training to those primarily working in the energy sector, focused, but not limited to; those working in oil and gas (offshore platforms), maritime (vessels – such as super yachts, cruise liners, or industry support vessels), renewables – offshore wind farms. The training they provide is mandatory in the UK for individuals crossing water in a helicopter – so they also train elite and special forces, emergency rescue teams, special operations teams, and other special interest groups. Petans also train local & national industry and nuclear firefighting teams. Confined Space training is also delivered to construction and utility companies, and they have recently introduced technical Rigger and Banksman/Slinger training.
Project Overview
This is a joint project delivered collaboratively by Petans Ltd and Reuzer. The project has been deliberately designed as a crossover placement, with the student sharing their time between both companies.
Petans delivers training, particularly within technical and safety-critical industries. Reuzer is a digital learning and creative technology company that specialises in transforming complex training content into modern, engaging digital formats using animation, graphics, and interactive design.
Training courses have to meet the standards of the awarding bodies and therefore Petans are limited to the videos they can use. Often training was developed in the late 1970’s early 1980’s. Videos are still the best way to explain/evidence areas of the courses – but they can look old fashioned. Sometimes the way people and buildings look in the videos distracts learners from absorbing the important messages within the videos. This project would highlight options for ‘updating’ some of the media content within our courses.
The project focuses on assessing whether existing training content can be successfully converted into modern digital learning materials. The student will take part in real training delivery at Petans (3 day BOSIET) and then work with Reuzer to understand how that content could be redesigned, costed, and scaled digitally.
Project Aim
To develop a clear, evidence-based business case and feasibility assessment for converting legacy training content into modern, animation-led and graphic-rich digital learning assets, supporting strategic decision-making for both Petans and Reuzer.
Cross-Company Structure
This is a shared project across two companies:
• The student will split their time between Petans and Reuzer
• At Petans, the student will observe and take part in training
• At Reuzer, the student will work with the creative and digital learning team to understand content production, costs, and technical requirements
• Learning from both environments will be combined into one integrated project
Key Research Questions
• How is training currently delivered and experienced by learners?
• What legacy training content could be suitable for digital conversion?
• What does the full digital production process involve?
• What are the direct and hidden costs of creating animated and graphic-based training assets?
• What level of demand exists for modernised digital training?
• How commercially viable and scalable is this type of digital transformation, is it financially worthwhile?
What You Will Do
Across both companies, you will:
• Attend and observe training sessions delivered by Petans
• Take part in training activities to understand learner experience and content use
• Work with Reuzer’s creative team to understand the digital production process
• Analyse production stages including scripting, design, animation, development, and revision
• Carry out basic cost analysis using spreadsheets
• Research competitor activity and market demand
• Explore potential pricing and revenue models
• Assist in compiling findings into a structured business plan and feasibility report
Science, Engineering and Technical Understanding
This project develops STEM-related understanding through:
• Understanding how technical and safety training is designed and delivered
• Learning how digital tools and animation communicate complex engineering concepts
• Applying analytical thinking to cost modelling and feasibility assessment
• Exploring how technology supports workforce training in engineering and energy sectors
Planning and Organisation
You will:
• Plan your time across two organisations
• Keep clear records of observations from training sessions
• Organise research, cost data, and assumptions clearly
• Use evidence to justify conclusions and recommendations
• Manage tasks independently while working with two professional teams
Skills Developed
• Project management and organisation
• Research and data analysis
• Microsoft Office and spreadsheet modelling
• Communication across technical and creative teams
• Understanding digital learning and training delivery
• Confidence working across multiple organisations
Final Outputs
• A structured business plan outlining the commercial case for digital transformation
• A feasibility report covering technical, financial, and operational considerations
• Cost models and simple spreadsheets supporting conclusions
• Market and competitor analysis
• Clear, evidence-based recommendations for both companies
• A presentation summarising findings and next steps
Reflection and Evaluation
Your report may include:
• What you learned from working across two different companies
• Differences between classroom and digital training delivery
• Key risks and uncertainties identified
• How confident you are in the commercial and technical conclusions • How the project influenced your understanding of careers in digital learning an
