ARC Marine works with RWE Rampion Offshore Wind Farm to create artificial reef

  • Project : 100% deployment of ARC marine Reef Cubes® in lieu of conventional rock for the purpose of providing scour protection around a turbine using low carbon materials and creating a Nature Inclusive Design (NID) artificial reef at the same time. Designed to the first code of practice for NID PAS1401:2025 which ARC marine helped develop in collaboration with many industry developers, competitors, universities, consultants and the likes of DEFRA, Natural England & the Environment Agency.
  • Design & Testing: Carried out by ARC marine and extensive testing at HR Wallingford to finalise the design. This includes size & blend of Reef cubes® required, stability and all tested in controlled test conditions.
  • Total quantity of Reef cubes® being deployed: 88,000 of various sizes.k
  • Deployment method: Standard Fall Pipe Vessel as would install rock.
  • Timelines: Deployment will be Q3/4 2025.
  • Monitoring: A monitoring programme will be in place to document progress and log bio-diversity gains from the project.
  • Additional points: This reef will continue to develop, further enhancing biodiversity, increase fish stocks, take carbon out of the water column and due to limited vessel activity (other than maintenance vessels) is relatively protected against potentially harmful vessel activities, thus giving the reef and marine habitats the greatest chance of survival, reaching maturity and breeding. Due to the material make up of our products the reef itself can remain in situ and does not require decommissioning, subject to approval.
